Improve The Chances
That Your Lost iPod Touch or iPhone Will Find Its Way Back To You
I like to believe that most
people are honest and will "do the right thing" given a little
help...
The Problem
My recently purchased Apple
iPod
Touch is - I hate to admit it - a thing of pure beauty in
both form and function.
Even before making the purchase, I considered how I was going to
keep such an expensive toy from going missing. Sure, the
Apple online store offers up to two lines of free laser
engraving, but what can you squeeze into two lines? Name
and telephone number? What if I move to a different part
of the country and get a new number? What if I want to
eBay the device at a later date; who is going to pay a good
price for a Touch with someone else's name/number engraved on
its back?
And, besides, read the Apple Store's
fine print (as of this writing, April 9, 2008) and you will
see that "Configure-to-order, personalized or other
customized products may not be returned for refund or exchange
under any circumstances unless such product is Dead on Arrival
(see the section below for more detailed information on such
Dead on Arrival products)."
Okay, laser engraving is out of the question.
Sticky label? Black felt-tip marker? Perhaps a
StuffBak label?
I thought about this off and on for 10 days and ultimately came
up with what I believe to be a good solution; one that will help
the honest finder of my "lost" iPod return it to me while
avoiding the messier options noted above.
The Solution
Customized wallpaper.
Yep, that's my solution. I began by googling "ipod touch
wallpaper" and quickly came upon
this site which offers many hundreds of free images properly
sized for the Touch. I scrolled through several pages of
them and settled on this one the moment I saw it:
In addition to the cartoonish quality of the image, the broad
expanse of unadorned color in its lower half was perfectly
suited to my plan.
I downloaded the image file, opened it in an appropriate editor,
and proceeded to add a transparent text box over that green
expanse. Next, I flattened the combined layers and saved
the new image as a jpg file:
Finally, I synced the file to
the iPod Touch and configured the device to use it as wallpaper;
the result is shown below. It's a cinch that anyone who
finds my iPod Touch will quickly stumble upon this screen and
[hopefully] do the right thing.

| Well, I would like to believe that at least one out of three potential "finders" would make an attempt to return something - even an envelope full of cash - if we make it easy for them to do so. - Carmine | |
