Install / Use Opera
Mini Browser on the Treo 650, 700p, etc.
One practical way to view web sites
which require JavaScript to
obtain full functionality.
If you haven't already done so - and you probably haven't - you
will first need to install IBM's WebSphere Everyplace Micro
Environment, a free download which as of this writing can be
found at
http://www.palm.com/us/support/jvm/. Note, although
Palm's site indicates that the download "is available at no cost
to customers who purchased a Tungsten T5, Tungsten E2, LifeDrive,
Zire 72 handhelds or a Treo 650 smartphone handheld", other
sites such as
this PalmGear page state, "Users of Treo 650, Treo 680, Treo
700p, LifeDrive, Tungsten T5, Tungsten E2, T|X, or Zire 72 can
download the software at no cost from Palm."
Pay particular attention to the installation instructions on
Palm's download page. The downloaded zip file contains
many files, only two of which (J9JavaVMMidp20.prc and
JavaVMCheck_enUS.prc) typically need be hotsynced to your
device.
Once the JVM has been installed, you will need to make a few
configuration changes prior to running Opera Mini. Failure
to do so will result in Opera Mini crashing to the Home screen
each time you try to load a web site (if you watch closely, you
might see an "End user license agreement" page flash by just
before the crash). To make the changes, open the Palm
Prefs application and scroll to the bottom where you will find
the newly added "IBM Java VM" entry.
Make the changes shown below and tap "Done" when finished.
Download the Opera Mini browser, currently available at
http://www.operamini.com/download/ and hotsync (if you
downloaded to your PC instead of directly to the device via
WAP).
And, that should do it. Just one thing: you can't get out
of Opera Mini by tapping your smartphone's "Home" key - you need
to use the Menu -> Exit function, as illustrated below.
