FAQ - Decimal Equivalents, Drills, And Tap Drills For The PalmOS

  1. What is the current version of Decimal Equivalents, Drills, And Tap Drills For The PalmOS?

The application is currently at v2.01

  2. What is the difference between the Registered and Unregistered versions?

The downloadable 5 day demo app is fully functional with a few minor exceptions and annoyances:
    • The opening splash screen cannot be disabled
    • "Tap anywhere to begin" on the opening splash screen displays a nag message with an "Ok" button which must be tapped to continue.
    • Changing the View Options displays a nag message with an "Ok" button prior to regenerating the display list.
    • A nag message with an "Ok" button is displayed upon exiting the application.
    • View Options and Preferences are not saved between sessions and the application always starts up on the default screen (Decimal Equivalents and Drill Sizes) with the default list (fractions only, with 1/64 at the top of the list).  The Registered version "saves state" as well as Options/Preferences and starts up exactly where you left off when you last exited the application.

  3. Do I have to pay for version upgrades?

Absolutely not!  All upgrades are free at this time and, although I reserve the right to change this policy at a later date, I do not anticipate doing so.  It would only happen in the case of a major reinvention of the application.

To get the latest version upgrade, simply download the current demo file from this site or from your place of purchase, install per instructions below, and re-enter your registration code.

  4. How do I install a version upgrade or re-install my current version?

In the case of Decimal Equivalents, Drills, And Tap Drills For The PalmOS, it is imperative that you delete the current app prior to installing the upgrade.  Not doing so will result in invalid saved pointers, resulting in a very confused display with multiple entries for a single item, entries out of sequence, etc.

    To delete a previous version:
    1. Ensure that you know your correct registration code prior to beginning.  If not certain, start the application and tap the "Registered" button on the splash ("About") screen or tap Menu -> Options -> Register.
    2. Turn on your PalmOS PDA and, if necessary, tap the "Home" ("Applications" on older models) icon to return to the application launcher screen.
    3. Tap the "Menu" icon or the menu area at the top of the screen and select the "Delete" option.
    4. Wait a few seconds for the application list to be populated, then find and tap to highlight the "DecEquivs" application.
    5. Tap the "Delete" button to remove the application.
    6. If present, delete the following files:

         DecEquivsBitmaps-DCEQ
         DecEquivs.pdb
         DecEquivs2.pdb
         TapDrills.pdb
         TapDrills2.pdb
         DecEquivs2-DcEq.pdb
         TDrills-DcEq.pdb
         TDrills2-DcEq.pdb
         Fraction-DcEq.pdb
         Letter-DcEq.pdb
         MM-DcEq.pdb
         Wire-DcEq.pdb

    7. Tap the "Done" button to return to the application launcher screen.
    8. Install and HotSync the new version in the usual manner.
    9. Re-enter your registration code.

  5. I just upgraded to a new version and now I get a fatal error or messed up display every time I start the application!

    See above.

  6. How do I uninstall Decimal Equivalents, Drills, And Tap Drills For The PalmOS?

    Uninstall?  Gosh, why?  :)

Oh, well, if you must.  Turn on your Palm OS device and tap the "Home" icon (on newer devices) or the "Applications" icon (on older ones).  Now, tap the Menu and select the "Delete" option under the "App" column.  Wait a few seconds for the application list to be populated, find the "DecEquivs" entry and tap it once to highlight it then tap the "Delete" button.  If present, delete the following files in the same manner:

       DecEquivsBitmaps-DCEQ
       DecEquivs.pdb
       DecEquivs2.pdb
       TapDrills.pdb
       TapDrills2.pdb
       DecEquivs2-DcEq.pdb
       TDrills-DcEq.pdb
       TDrills2-DcEq.pdb
       Fraction-DcEq.pdb
       Letter-DcEq.pdb
       MM-DcEq.pdb
       Wire-DcEq.pdb

  7. My registration code doesn't work!

Registration codes are calculated based upon the exact HotSync ID / User Name provided by you at the time of purchase.  For example, the code generating algorithm will produce different codes for "carmine castiglia" vs "Carmine Castiglia" and for "Bob Jones" vs "Bob  Jones" (can you see the second space between Bob and Jones?).

To enter your registration code, start the application and tap the "Unregistered" button at the lower left of the opening splash screen to go to the registration screen.  Tap once in the "Reg. Code" field and enter the code exactly as it was given to you, including any leading zeroes, then tap the "Register" button.  If all is well, the application will respond with a "Thanks for registering!" message.

If you get an "Invalid code" message instead (and have double-checked your entry), it is likely that the HotSync ID / User Name provided at the time of purchase does not match the HotSync ID on your device.

Please download and HotSync MyName.prc to your device.  When you run this tiny application it will generate a report similar to the following:

Please contact me and include all of the information generated by the MyName app (letters, hyphens, digits - everything!).  I will provide a replacement code as soon as possible.

  8. I am trying to download your application but all I get is an empty zip file??

It is very frustrating I know because it has happened to me dozens (hundreds?) of times.  I finally asked the WinZip tech support folks about this and they replied:

"We typically see this behaviour when the temporary internet files folder is full; you might try clearing some files from this location, either manually or via your browser's options."

"There's also a known issue with the internet explorer program; you might check the information available at the URL http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308090."

"Another possible explanation is that an Anti Virus product is involved; if the 'scan' of the archive is not completed when the browser 'passes' the file to WinZip, the result is a 'blank' WinZip window. I'd suggest temporarily disabling or reconfiguring your Anti virus software to avoid the behaviour."

And, I would add, that the easiest short-term solution seems to be to save the file to your disk rather than opening it directly from the download site.  In Internet Explorer, that means right-clicking the download link and choosing the "Save Target As" option from the context-sensitive menu.  In Netscape Navigator it's "Save Link Target As".

  9. Why can't I find or purchase this app at PalmGear/Handango/etc?

Because at some point a guy has just got to take a stand.

The major ESD's (Electronic Sales Distributors) have raised their take on each sale to an unforgivable 40% and more of selling price.   Frankly, I would rather give up the potential sales while making more of an effort to drive buyers directly to my (this) web site.

  10. Is Decimal Equivalents, Drills, And Tap Drills For The PalmOS compatible with the StyleTap® Platform on Windows Mobile devices?

The application was last tested with StyleTap Platform version 1.1.007 on a Hewlett-Packard iPaq rx 3715 and performed well.  The most recent release of Decimal Equivalents, Drills, And Tap Drills For The PalmOS, v2.01, includes updated graphics elements designed specifically for the StyleTap Platform and looks better than ever.
